Solo Leveling Season 2 – Full Recap: Jinwoo Rises to Power, Shadow Becomes Legend
Solo Leveling Season 2: Arise from the Shadow Recap (Episodes 1-13)
Episode 1: “You Aren’t E-Rank, Are You?” »
Season 2 opens with Sung Jinwoo, newly empowered, trying to resume his normal life. He accompanies his sister Jinah to a parent-teacher conference, where the teacher notices his physical transformation. She also asks him to speak to Han Song-Yi (Jinah's young E-Rank Hunter friend), who dropped out of high school to pursue her career as a Hunter. Jinwoo meets Song-Yi, and to show her the realities of the profession, they join a team as observers in a dungeon. What was supposed to be a simple training outing goes wrong: the portal turns red, trapping everyone in a Red Gate, a very dangerous parallel dungeon.
Inside, Jinwoo protects the lower-ranked Hunters (including Song-Yi) whom the arrogant A-Rank team leader Kim Chul wanted to abandon. In an icy landscape infested with Ice Slayers and giant bears, Jinwoo springs into action. He saves Song-Yi in the nick of time and reveals a glimpse of his power by secretly summoning his shadow army to slaughter the attacking ice bears. Meanwhile, Kim Chul's scouting team is brutally ambushed by the ice elves, killing most of his men, and only Kim Chul escapes by cowardly fleeing. Outside, the Hunter Association is alarmed by the appearance of the Red Gate and sends reinforcements. We also see that a mysterious individual – Hwang Dong-Soo – has just arrived in Korea with the stated intention of “killing Jinwoo”, in retaliation for the events of season 1 involving his brother.
The episode ends with Jinwoo and the survivors still stuck in the icy dungeon, as an ice elf appears, a cruel sneer on his lips.
Episode 2: “I Suppose You Aren’t Aware”
In the Red Gate, Jinwoo takes the initiative to secure the group of survivors. Faced with the carcasses of the giant bears he just killed, he gives the command "Rise," resurrecting the bears into an army of docile shadows under his control. Kim Chul, already traumatized by the elves' massacre of his team, loses his composure upon reuniting with Jinwoo and the Hunters he had abandoned. Terrified and unable to accept his responsibility, Kim Chul then attempts to kill the survivors to cover his escape, but Jinwoo stops him in time.
A group of ice elves then appears and attacks them. While Jinwoo holds the enemies' attention—revealing in the process that he understands their magical language, which intrigues the elf leader—the other hunters retreat toward the dungeon's exit. The fight intensifies: even Jinwoo's shadow army struggles to contain all the elves. At the height of the battle, Kim Chul, driven mad by fear, desperately throws himself at Jinwoo. Jinwoo doesn't hesitate to fatally incapacitate him, believing he has become a threat. In the process, Jinwoo resurrects Kim Chul as a fighting shadow—named "Iron"—thus adding a powerful soldier to his army. Thanks to Iron and his other shadows, Jinwoo eliminates the remaining elves and finally manages to break through the Red Gate. Back outside, reinforcements (including S-Rank hunter Baek Yoonho) arrive. The news of Kim Chul's death shocks the Association officials, but Jinwoo avoids giving any explanations and quickly slips away, not wanting to attract attention. Han Song-yi, meanwhile, is impressed and begins to admire Jinwoo in a new light.
This episode shows how much Jinwoo has changed since his debut: he's no longer the frail E-Rank, and he's ready to do anything to protect his people, even if it means eliminating a dangerous Hunter.
Episode 3: “Still a Long Way to Go”
Back in Seoul, Jinwoo secretly continues his training and the expansion of his Shadow Army. He is seen clearing a dungeon with his loyal friend Yoo Jinho. The latter is stunned to see Jinwoo's legion of Shadow Soldiers in action for the first time. Later, over a boozy dinner, an emotional Jinho confides to Jinwoo that he considers him his own big brother. A touched Jinwoo agrees to take him under his wing like a member of his family.
While Jinwoo is already planning to leave for a week of training, Jinho reveals that he has received an unexpected offer from his father: he can inherit the future family guild if he convinces Jinwoo to join. Jinwoo doesn't follow through, preferring to forge his own path, but Jinho decides to stay by his side anyway.
Before isolating himself, Jinwoo takes precautions. At home, he informs Jinah that he'll be away for a few days, leading her to assume he's going on a trip. In reality, Jinwoo plans to return to finish the infamous S-Rank dungeon "Demon Castle," which he had previously started.
To prepare, he visits a magic artifact shop and realizes how much his loot obtained through the system can bring him. For example, a dagger purchased for 2 million won through its interface can be resold for over 100 million won in the real world. This treasure trove will allow him to equip himself as best as possible.
Before leaving, Jinwoo secretly summons a few shadows to serve as invisible bodyguards for Jinah, protecting her in his absence. He then locks himself in the Demon Castle dungeon for a week in an attempt to harvest the Elixir of Life, which could cure his mother, who is still in an incurable sleep.
Jinwoo progresses at breakneck speed, exterminating hordes of demons and amassing souls to strengthen his powers. After 75 floors, he has already collected over 1,000 souls, gaining numerous levels. However, as he approaches level 80, he discovers that some of his shadows have been wiped out by a group of formidable demon knights. Far from being frightened, Jinwoo is almost delighted to see that even demons can sense fear in his presence—a sign that his power has grown even greater.
Meanwhile, strange events are taking place abroad. In the United States, an unknown hunter suddenly reappears after being missing for ten years, claiming to have escaped from a dungeon. This mysterious survivor is none other than Sung Il-Hwan, Jinwoo's father, who everyone believed to be dead. Gifted with supernatural strength and eyes glowing with an ominous light, Il-Hwan is questioned by American officials... until Hwang Dong-Soo, the S-Rank hunter from Washington, takes an interest in him. Upon learning that this survivor is Jinwoo's father, Dong-Soo sees him as a means to exact his revenge.
The episode concludes with these multiple plots in progress, as Jinwoo continues his ascent in the Demon Castle, determined but aware that he still has "a long way to go."
Episode 4: “I Need to Stop Faking”
Jinwoo realizes he can no longer hide behind the E-Rank if he wants to participate in high-level raids. Returning from training, he goes to the Hunter Association to request a rank reevaluation. There, the staff can hardly believe their instruments: Jinwoo's magical power is causing the measuring devices to trip. Finally, an official announces what everyone suspected—Jinwoo is an S-rank Hunter, only the tenth in South Korea.
The news spreads quickly through the guild. Choi Jong-In (the Hunters guild master) and Baek Yoonho (the White Tiger guild leader) rush to him, hoping to recruit him into their ranks. Jinwoo, however, politely declines all offers. He has no intention of joining an existing guild, despite Choi's insistence, as he seeks to unravel the mystery of the Red Gate, which Jinwoo was involved in. Jinwoo dodges questions and leaves the Association after also refusing an offer from Chairman Go Gunhee himself to join the Association as an independent Hunter.
Meanwhile, Hwang Dong-soo struggles to recover from a secret confrontation with Sung Il-hwan. It is revealed that Dong-soo located Jinwoo's father in America and fought him, but was left seriously injured. Humiliated, he plots his revenge by equipping himself with powerful artifacts, determined to defeat this hunter from another era the next time they meet.
Unaware of these schemes, Jinwoo focuses on a specific goal: completing the Demonic Castle to obtain the elixir capable of healing his mother. But before facing the final boss of this S-Rank dungeon, he decides to train in a lower-level raid to test his limits without attracting too much attention. He incognito joins an expedition of A-Rank hunters in an A-level dungeon, posing as a simple porter. There, he immediately senses that an unusual danger is lurking. Sure enough, the team stumbles upon a nest of superior orcs much stronger than expected. Jinwoo discreetly helps the group by eliminating enemies from the shadows, allowing the hunters to repel an initial assault wave and retreat to the exit. But their respite is short-lived: the portal suddenly closes behind them, trapping them inside.
Realizing they're stuck in another hidden dungeon (double dungeon), the team resigns itself to moving forward. Among the hunters present is Cha Hae-In, an S-Rank swordswoman who came to observe. From the outset, Cha is intrigued by Jinwoo—her hyper-developed sense of smell detects an abnormally pleasant odor on him, while all the other hunters inspire disgust in her. This unusual detail piques her curiosity (and that of Jinwoo, who doesn't understand why the young woman with the blushing face just... sniffed him).
Very quickly, the superior orcs go on the offensive. Jinwoo reveals some of his strength by summoning a few shadows to protect the surprised hunters. Despite this, the group comes under heavy pressure and is forced to retreat. The episode ends with Jinwoo preparing to lead the counterattack, determined to stop pretending to be weak.
Episode 5: “This Is What We’re Trained to Do”
The White Tiger Guild's expedition turns into a nightmare when it turns out the dungeon is teeming with extremely powerful High Orcs—each one rivaling an A-Rank Hunter. The orcs leap into a deadly ambush on the Association's Second Task Force, which Jinwoo serves as a fake porter. Caught off guard, several Hunters are killed or injured in the initial assault.
Jinwoo, for his part, skillfully intervenes from the shadows: thanks to his stealth skill, he discreetly eliminates or weakens isolated orcs to relieve his companions. Thanks to his invisible support, the group manages to push back the first wave in the nick of time and regroup.
Hunter Cha Hae-In, who witnessed part of the scene, begins to suspect that Jinwoo isn't the weak E-Rank he claims to be. She particularly notices that Jinwoo doesn't give off any of the nauseating scent typical of Hunters, and deduces that he's hiding his true power.
After a brief respite, the team attempts to return to the front gate to escape... alas, it is sealed off by a magical barrier. They have no choice: they must complete the raid. Jinwoo is then assigned as a porter accompanying the scouting team led by hunter Son Ki-Hoon. Under the guise of helping, Jinwoo stays behind and observes.
The episode also highlights the interactions between the hunters in this group: we notably discover the young mage Lee Bo-Ra (dressed in a gothic maid outfit and a mischievous personality), as well as other colorful members – a mage, a corrupt healer, etc., who bring a touch of life to the team.
As everyone prepares to face the threat, Cha Hae-In stays by Jinwoo's side, determined to learn more about him. The group advances cautiously and eventually reaches the orc boss room, a gigantic black orc named Kargalgan (or Karalgar). He commands a veritable army and proves to be far stronger than the other orcs.
From the very beginning of the fight, Kargalgan seriously wounds Ki-Hoon, the team leader, before the horrified eyes of his comrades. Chaos ensues: despite their training, the A-Rank hunters are overwhelmed by the magical power and brutality of the orc king. Faced with this debacle, Jinwoo decides it's time to abandon pretense.
He orders his shadows to attack from the open. His soldiers appear and engage in battle, stunning Cha Hae-In and the others, who can't believe their eyes. Jinwoo himself jumps into the fray. In a one-on-one encounter, he holds his own against Kargalgan, demonstrating S-Rank strength and agility.
Cha, who has no weapon (she came to observe and forgot hers in the rush), borrows a heavy mine pick and joins the fight as best she can. Despite reinforcements from the huntress and the shadows, the orc king proves a tough opponent, also wielding magic. He casts a spell that immobilizes almost everyone... except Jinwoo, who resists it thanks to his unique status.
The episode culminates with Jinwoo revealing the full extent of his power. His eyes glow with a blue glow as he summons more shadows and activates his abilities at full power. In a few intense exchanges, Jinwoo gains the upper hand. Kargalgan, wounded and stunned that a "mere human" could surpass him, finally attempts to flee. Jinwoo doesn't give him the chance: in a deluge of energy, he strikes him down and, with a gesture, exhumes his shadow.
The gigantic orc is reborn as a soldier in Jinwoo's army—this new servant is dubbed "Tusk" (a reference to his prominent tusks). With the threat eliminated, Jinwoo turns to his companions. Stunned by this turn of events, they stare at him in silence. Cha Hae-In, in particular, is both troubled and admiring.
Then appears Woo Jin-Chul, an inspector from the Association, sent to monitor this unusual raid. Wearing dark glasses, he decides to help Jinwoo go unnoticed: he pretends to the others that Jinwoo was a "secret weapon" of the Association for this raid, minimizing the incident. Taking advantage of Jin-Chul's cover, Jinwoo quietly leaves the scene without further explanation.
The White Tiger team is safe and sound, and everyone remembers the silhouette of this mysterious lone hunter with extraordinary powers. Meanwhile, Choi Jong-In, who learns of the exploit, vows to recruit Jinwoo at all costs, while Yoo Jinho, freed from his family obligations, decides to do everything he can to found his guild alongside Jinwoo.
Episode 6: [Untitled, transition between the victory against Kargalgan and the officialization of S-Rank]
After his victory against Kargalgan, Jinwoo is now the center of everyone's attention. The White Tiger team, stunned by this so-called carrier's display of strength, prefers to remain silent. Woo Jin-Chul, still on site, makes the cover official by explaining that Jinwoo was an undercover agent discreetly deployed by the Association to ensure the team's safety. This version reassures the Hunters present, but Jinwoo's name is slowly beginning to circulate in influential circles.
Cha Hae-In, still troubled by what she saw, keeps thinking about him. Her unique sense of smell prevents her from forgetting him: Jinwoo is the only Hunter whose aura doesn't repel her. She senses, without yet being able to explain it, that he is different from all the others. An implicit connection seems to be forming, although Jinwoo remains focused on his goals for now.
Meanwhile, Yoo Jinho works hard to convince his father that he needs no resources other than Jinwoo to found a guild. He pleads his friend's case, refusing to follow the instructions imposed to take over the family business. This radical choice marks a break between Jinho and his father, but strengthens the brotherly relationship between him and Jinwoo.
The Association, for its part, can no longer ignore Jinwoo's exploits. His involvement in several dungeons with remarkable anomalies, his role in neutralizing a Red Gate, his appearance in a double dungeon... everything points to the need for an official test. Jinwoo receives a summons for a second evaluation, this time in an official setting, with high-level supervisors.
The episode concludes with this air of anticipation: Jinwoo accepts the summons. It's time for him to reveal to the world what he's become—an S-rank Hunter, far beyond anything seen before.
Episode 7: “The 10th S-Rank Hunter”
Jinwoo is now officially ranked S-Rank, but this sudden promotion doesn't go unnoticed. Summoned a second time to the Association for a final exam, he destroys the measuring instruments once again, before the astonished eyes of Baek Yoonho and Choi Jong-in. Upon his release, an unexpected TV report reveals his identity to the public. A news crew on hand (initially to interview a local celebrity, Lee Minsung) films Jinwoo leaving the building. The news spreads quickly: Hunter Sung Jinwoo is the tenth highest-ranked S-Rank in the country.
Jinwoo becomes a celebrity in spite of himself. His sister Jinah learns with shock that her "little" brother is part of the elite hunters. While the media goes into overdrive, Jinwoo remains true to himself and refuses all opportunistic offers. The young idol Lee Minsung, upset at having been upstaged, tries to provoke him, but is quickly rebuffed (not without a cold reprimand from Inspector Woo Jin-Chul).
Meanwhile, Yoo Jinho returns to Jinwoo with a proposition: his father (CEO Yoo Myung-Han) has finally given him carte blanche to create their own guild, on the express condition that Jinwoo become its central member. However, Jinwoo declines the offer to join the Yoo family guild, preferring to maintain his independence. A disappointed but tenacious Jinho then decides to leave the family cocoon to follow Jinwoo at all costs in his future projects.
Meanwhile, Chairman Go Gunhee offers Jinwoo a special arrangement for the Jeju raid: as a new S-Rank, he could join the South Korean team heading out to confront the giant ants on the island. Jinwoo, however, doesn't immediately respond—he has other pressing priorities.
Indeed, at the same time, Jinho's father's health suddenly deteriorates. He is struck by the same mysterious illness as Jinwoo's mother (the "eternal sleep sickness" caused by the ambient mana). Myung-Han gradually sinks into an incurable torpor. These events remind Jinwoo of the urgency to save his mother before others succumb.
To perfect his equipment for the upcoming battles, Jinwoo returns to the magic artifact shop. By reselling a few items gleaned through the system, he builds up a comfortable budget—the transactions reach staggering sums, in the hundreds of millions. Baek Yoonho, who is watching from afar, realizes with amazement that Jinwoo seems to be able to increase his power, an ability unknown to Hunters (usually frozen at their initial awakening level). This revelation leaves him pensive and a little worried.
After stocking up on healing potions and items, Jinwoo feels ready to face the boss of the Demonic Castle. Before doing so, he takes care to strengthen security around Jinah by leaving more protective shadows at her side. Then he dives back into the infernal dungeon. This time, his progress is meteoric: he crosses the final levels one by one, defeating increasingly stronger demons.
Arriving on the 100th floor of the Demon Castle, Jinwoo faces off against the Demon King Baran, the ruler of the castle. The episode concludes with Jinwoo standing before the gigantic doors leading to the boss room, aware that every ordeal he has endured so far was only a prelude—and that the real fight now awaits him.
Episode 8: “Looking Up Was Tiring Me Out”
On the 100th floor of the Demon Castle, Jinwoo engages in battle with Baran, the Demon Monarch. Before reaching Baran's throne, he must defeat his elite guard. During the battle, Jinwoo spares the life of a young demon named Esil Radiru, who kneels to beg him not to kill her.
Intrigued by this unique enemy, Jinwoo agrees to let her live on the condition that she serve as his guide through the castle. Although Esil sneakily attempts to attack him from behind, Jinwoo easily overpowers her and reiterates his ultimatum. Impressed and terrified, the demon agrees to cooperate. In exchange, she promises to obtain a "permit" for him to access the next floor (each level of the dungeon is locked by a key object).
As they progress, Jinwoo learns more about this demonic world. Esil explains that the demons in this dungeon all have an order etched in their minds: some, like her, are tasked with "protecting this realm," while others (like Baran) seem driven by hatred for humans. She also reveals that her people were taken from their own world at war with a terrible threat, only to be transplanted here for some unknown reason—but at that moment, Esil strangely "glitches" and vanishes, as if some force prevented her from saying more.
Jinwoo realizes that the dungeon system prohibits him from revealing certain secrets. Esil regains consciousness shortly afterward, with no memory of her blackout. Despite his distrust, Jinwoo decides to trust her temporarily.
Along the way, they stop at the castle of Lord Radiru—Esil's father. Upon learning that a human has defeated his soldiers and is "borrowing" his daughter, he flies into a rage. Jinwoo defuses the misunderstanding by clarifying that he only needs Esil as a guide, not a trophy. Lord Radiru, intimidated by Jinwoo's power, eventually gives him the key to access Baran's throne room.
Jinwoo and Esil thus arrive at the Demon Monarch for the final duel. The battle between Jinwoo and Baran is titanic. Baran, gigantic and clad in nightmarish armor, launches devastating lightning bolts while Jinwoo counters with his daggers and advanced assassin skills. The room trembles with shock. Hiroyuki Sawano's epic music accompanies the battle, further accentuating the intensity of the moment.
Despite their size difference, Jinwoo holds his own against the Demon King. He is attacked by a poisonous attack—Baran's whip-like tongue slashes at him and injects a powerful venom—but thanks to his resistance to toxins, Jinwoo quickly neutralizes the poison.
Esil, lurking nearby, is torn: should she help Jinwoo or Baran? At the crucial moment, when Baran seems to be gaining the upper hand, Esil makes an unexpected choice and comes to Jinwoo's aid by briefly distracting the Monarch. This support allows Jinwoo to turn the tables.
Finally, in a flurry of energy, Jinwoo executes Baran by severing his head with a spectacular dagger strike. Victory is complete. Exhausted, Jinwoo realizes that he has reached level 100 thanks to this fight. As a reward, he obtains the precious last ingredient of the Elixir of Life he coveted.
Touched by Esil's loyalty, he keeps his promise and spares her. Better still, he tells her that her family will be able to regain control of the demon kingdom, now free of Baran. Esil, relieved, gives a rare smile of gratitude. Jinwoo bids her farewell, promising to come see her again one day if the opportunity arises.
As he leaves the dungeon, a system message indicates that the "dungeon will revert to its original state." Jinwoo worries that this may mean that Esil and the other demons will lose all memory of him once the dungeon resets. Uncertain, he remains hopeful that he will meet the demon again one day and see if she remembers him.
Finally out of the Demonic Castle, Jinwoo now has what it takes to concoct the Elixir and save his mother. But he doesn't have time to rest: outside, the situation is getting worse. We learn that a giant winged ant from Jeju Island has managed to cross the sea and attack civilians on a small coastal island. This single ant, as strong as a Rank A Hunter, wreaked havoc before being taken down by a volunteer Hunter.
This tragedy confirms the urgency of intervening in Jeju and eliminating the Queen Ant before her monsters swarm. The Korean Association therefore organizes a joint operation with the best Japanese hunters for a major raid on Jeju Island. Among the Japanese team is their number one hunter, Goto Ryuji, presented as a formidable strategist.
In Korea, all available S-Rank players—Choi Jong-In, Baek Yoonho, Cha Hae-In, Lim Tae-Gyu (the archer), Ma Dong-Wook (the tank), and so on—are mobilized. Go Gunhee, the Association president, also wants Jinwoo to participate. Jinwoo, now free from his commitment to the dungeon, will have to decide whether to join the most crucial battle the country has ever seen.
Episode 9: “It Was All Worth It”
Jinwoo returns to the hospital, his heart pounding, to finally save his mother. In the room, he synthesizes the Elixir of Life by combining the ingredients obtained from the Demon Castle. He administers the potion to his still-sleeping mother… seconds pass, endless, with no apparent result. Jinwoo begins to despair when Mrs. Chaé finally slowly opens her eyes. She emerges from her coma and recognizes her son.
The scene is poignant: Jinwoo, overcome with emotion, bursts into tears as he clutches his awakened mother's hand. It had been four years since he had last heard her voice. Jinah runs up and sobs into her mother's arms. For Jinwoo, everything was worth it—every fight, every injury—just for this moment of reunion.
This emotionally charged sequence reveals a previously unseen vulnerable side of Jinwoo, allowing him to finally express the pain and loneliness he carried within. Once the euphoria subsides, however, Jinwoo feels a certain disconnect with his family. He realizes that during his time as a hunter, he crossed irreversible lines—he had to kill, including humans, to survive and protect his family. He wonders, his gaze lost, how his mother and sister would perceive him if they learned everything he's done.
But he hardly has time to dwell on these thoughts: the time for the Jeju raid is approaching. At the Association, the South Korean hunters gather. Jinwoo finds some familiar faces there: Baek Yoonho, Choi Jong-In, Lim Tae-Gyu, Ma Dong-Wook… and Cha Hae-In, still recovering from her injuries from the orc dungeon, but present to make up the numbers. Ten Japanese hunters led by Goto Ryuji also arrive in Seoul.
A diplomatic meeting is arranged between the two teams before the start. From the outset, the tension is palpable: some Japanese, confident in their numerical superiority, eye the Koreans. Goto Ryuji speaks privately with Go Gunhee, wearing an enigmatic smile. Gunhee also invites Jinwoo to officially participate in the Jeju raid as reinforcements for the Korean team.
Jinwoo hesitates—he's worried about his mother, who has just woken up—but the prospect of further disaster if he doesn't intervene convinces him to accept. Before leaving, a joint training session is proposed between the Japanese and Korean S-Ranks, in the form of a friendly match, just to "test their strength." Four fighters from each country enter the training arena for a mock battle.
Jinwoo, considered a "mage type" (distance) by the Japanese, stays back to observe. The duel begins cordially, but one of the Japanese S-Rank quickly oversteps the mark: drunk with superiority, he attacks Cha Hae-In at full power, nearly seriously injuring her. Jinwoo intervenes instantly, stopping the blow in its tracks and putting an end to the heated exchange.
The incident casts a chill. Goto Ryuji, to calm things down (and mostly out of personal gain), then proposes a one-on-one duel between himself and Jinwoo. Jinwoo accepts, curious to gauge the strength of the reputed Japanese number one. The two men face off under the astonished gaze of the other Hunters. They quickly escalate the exchange beyond simple training: Jinwoo and Goto begin to fight seriously, each pushing the other to reveal their true potential.
The atmosphere is charged with mana, so much so that Choi Jong-In and Baek Yoonho prefer to interrupt the duel before it escalates. Jinwoo, who had let himself be overcome by the passion of the fight, regains his composure and retreats. He has nevertheless been able to gauge the strength of Goto and the other Japanese S-Rank, and, as a precaution, he has even discreetly slipped a few spy shadows into their shadows to keep an eye on them.
Goto, for his part, is intrigued by Jinwoo—he senses a power in him he hadn't anticipated. After this tense training session, everyone prepares for the real raid. Jinwoo informs Chairman Go Gunhee that he won't be leaving for Jeju with the original team after all: he prefers to stay close to his newly awakened mother, at least for the time being.
This decision surprises the other S-Rank members (who were hoping for his support against the ants), but Jinwoo has a plan: he keeps an eye on the situation from afar using the shadows he implanted. Meanwhile, Baek Yoonho reunites with his old friend Min Byung-Gu (a former S-Rank healer and traumatized survivor of the previous Jeju expedition). Together, they share a drink to ward off the upcoming stress.
Byung-Gu, scarred for life by Jeju, had retired, but he finally decides to return to service to support Baek and his comrades during the new mission. The parallel with the tragedy of ten years ago is on everyone's mind, but the hunters, far from flinching, show fierce determination.
D-Day arrives. Two ships carrying the South Korean and Japanese teams set sail for Jeju Island. At sea, a swarm of flying ants descends upon the fleet, attacking it from the sky. Choi Jong-In, the great mage, then enters the scene: he casts a prodigious fireball that pulverizes the entire swarm in a single blow.
The hunters watch in awe as Choi's devastating skill sets mount, drawing a grim sense of satisfaction at finally getting revenge on the ants that killed his former comrades. Once the danger is averted, the ships dock at Jeju. The forces split up according to the agreed-upon plan: the Japanese task force (with 10 hunters) will remain outside to confront the main swarm of ants, while the Korean team (6 S-Rank hunters) will directly infiltrate the Queen's nest to eliminate her.
Equipped and determined, the South Korean hunters plunge into the dark tunnels of the giant burrow. Thanks to Baek Yoonho's clairvoyant ability (in his beast form, he detects the Queen by scent), they quickly locate the royal chamber. Without wasting any time, they launch an assault on the Queen Ant. The massive, immobile Queen Ant is guarded by a multitude of warrior ants.
A fierce battle ensues: Baek Yoonho transforms into a huge, ferocious beast and slashes at the ants with vengeful rage. Lim Tae-gyu fires mana-infused arrows that explode the ants' shells. Cha Hae-in, despite her wounds not fully healed, demonstrates virtuosity with the sword and finally delivers the fatal blow that decapitates the Queen.
Within minutes, the nest matriarch was defeated. The Korean hunters breathed a sigh of relief—their primary objective had been accomplished. Alas, their respite would be short-lived...
Episode 10: [Direct sequel – the arrival of the Ant King]
On the surface, the battle is turning in favor of the Japanese, who, in sheer numbers, are decimating entire swarms of ants. But a shadow appears: the Ant King , the winged humanoid creature born shortly before the raid, attacks. This monster—which the hunters are already nicknamed the Black Ant because of its blue-black hue—is endowed with unprecedented intelligence and cruelty.
He descends upon the Japanese ranks and begins a massacre. Within moments, several Japanese S-Rank fighters are disemboweled or decapitated without being able to fight back. One of them, the healer Shimizu, attempts to trade her life in exchange for money to treat a wounded colleague—a despicable habit she had—but she is interrupted once and for all: the Black Ant rips her head off, killing her instantly.
Panic spreads among the survivors. Goto Ryuji , who had held his forces back, watches the scene in horror. Out of 10 Japanese S-Ranks, six have already died within minutes. After this carnage, the Black Ant heads calmly into the nest... where the Koreans are.
Still unaware of the turn of events outside, the six Korean hunters congratulate themselves on having eliminated the Queen. However, they discover a gigantic broken egg in the royal chamber—a sign that a new threat has emerged. Suddenly, the Black Ant bursts into the room. Seeing the lifeless body of its "mother," it lets out a howl of rage and pain.
Before the hunters' astonished eyes, the monster does the unthinkable: it furiously devours pieces of the dead Queen , displaying its incredible brutality. A desperate struggle then begins.
The Black Ant charges at the Korean hunters. With extraordinary strength and speed, it seriously injures Cha Hae-In, Ma Dong-Wook, Lim Tae-Gyu, and Choi Jong-In in just a few blows. Ma Dong-Wook, despite being an invincible colossus, has his torso broken; Lim loses an arm; Choi is thrown unconscious against a wall. Only Baek Yoonho is still standing thanks to his bestial form, but he is bleeding profusely.
Miraculously, no one is killed instantly, as Min Byung-Gu , the healer, works with all his might to heal each wound as soon as it is inflicted. His healing magic keeps his comrades alive despite the chain of deadly attacks.
The Black Ant then notices the plot: understanding that the healer is the key to the humans' tenacious resistance, it teleports behind Byung-Gu and pierces his back with its sharp right hand. The unfortunate man collapses, and the Ant coldly finishes off the healer by tearing off his head as Baek Yoonho and the others look on in horror.
Baek's friend Byung-Gu dies in the same place as their comrade Eun-Seok ten years earlier, making the situation tragically familiar. The Korean hunters, now without medical support, are at the mercy of the monster.
Against all odds, the Black Ant doesn't finish them off. She speaks— in human language! She proclaims that none of them are the "king of humans" she seeks, then abruptly leaves the room to continue her quest elsewhere.
The creature had indeed heard, through the ants, that an exceptional man was present on the island. Convinced that he was the most powerful, it decided to challenge this "king of humans." It flew out of the nest.
Outside, the Black Ant comes face to face with Goto Ryuji and the last three surviving Japanese hunters. Goto, who has been holding back his strength until now, finally draws his katana and stands before the monster. Believing Goto strong enough to be the king of the humans, the Ant engages him in a fierce duel . The two opponents disappear into the distance in a titanic exchange of blows.
Meanwhile, in the ravaged royal hall, the Korean hunters' situation is critical. All are critically injured, and without Byung-gu, they will soon succumb to their wounds or to the next wave of returning soldier ants.
Then a miracle occurs: shadows emerge from the ground alongside the Hunters. They are Jinwoo's soldiers! Thanks to the spies he had placed, Jinwoo has monitored the progress of the fight and decided to intervene at the most opportune moment.
His shadow knights—Iron, Igris, Tank, Tusk—materialize and form a wall around the wounded hunters, pushing back the incoming ants. And in a burst of blue light, Jinwoo himself suddenly appears in the room , swapping places with one of his shadows that was present.
The surprise is complete: the Korean Hunters, on the verge of unconsciousness, see Jinwoo standing between them and the army of ants. "The Shadow Monarch" has entered the scene, ready to turn the tables.
Episode 11: “Are You the King of Humans?” »
Jinwoo arrives just in time at the devastated nest. Seeing the critical condition of Cha Hae-In and the other S-Ranks, he takes several supreme healing potions from his inventory and administers them to the sprawled hunters. Within seconds, Baek, Ma Dong-Wook, Lim Tae-Gyu, and Choi Jong-In are miraculously healed of most of their injuries.
Only Cha Hae-In, who is very seriously injured, does not react – her injuries are beyond the potion's capacity. Jinwoo then gently takes her in his arms , determined to save her at all costs.
This is the moment the Black Ant chooses to return to the nest: stained with the blood of Goto Ryuji, whom it has just defeated , it returns to look for the true "human king." When it sees Jinwoo, it immediately senses his fearsome aura. The monster understands that Sung Jinwoo is the opponent it wanted to face .
The other Hunters, still in shock, watch helplessly as Jinwoo hands Cha Hae-In over to Baek Yoonho and faces the creature.
Meanwhile, back at base camp, the head of the Japanese delegation —the cynical orchestrator of the operation—learns that seven of his ten S-Rank troops (including Goto) are already dead. Rather than rescue the Koreans, he sees this as a political opportunity: he orders the three remaining Japanese hunters to return to the nest to eliminate the Black Ant, hoping that the Koreans will have been decimated by then, weakening it.
His despicable plan is to reclaim the glory of victory for Japan , despite the sacrifice of his own troops. This maneuver reveals the extent of his perfidy and disregard for human life.
In the nest, Jinwoo and the Black Ant engage in a dantesque battle. The creature, armed with all the abilities stolen from the hunters it devoured, wields the spear and magic with virtuosity. Jinwoo, for his part, unleashes the power accumulated within him without restraint. The shock of their blows shakes the ground. The surrounding soldier ants are swept away by the shockwave. The duel takes on almost mythical proportions, like a clash of titans .
Jinwoo appears more monstrous than ever to the others, his impassive face expressing only cold, unwavering determination . The Black Ant, surprised to encounter an opponent who surpasses it, redoubles its violence. It manages to slash Jinwoo with its poisonous sword-tongue , a blow that would have killed anyone—but Jinwoo neutralizes the poison instantly thanks to his enhanced immunity.
The monster finally realizes that he has no chance: for the first time, fear is visible in his eyes . Panicked, the Black Ant tries to escape by galloping on all fours towards the exit.
Jinwoo chases after it and activates the ultimate evolution of his Mutilation skill : armed with his two legendary daggers, he swoops down on the creature and slashes it with a barrage of scintillating blows. With a final scream, the Ant King collapses, defeated .
Immediately, the surviving ants retreat in chaotic disarray —without a queen or king, they are reduced to a leaderless army. The Jeju raid is won: the swarm is decimated and will no longer pose a threat.
Jinwoo, panting but victorious, doesn't waste a second: he returns to Cha Hae-In, who lies inert. The young woman's life hangs by a thread —her aura is dangerously weakening. Jinwoo takes a chance: he takes out the small vial containing the rest of the Elixir of Life (the one prepared for his mother) and pours it between Cha's lips.
Unfortunately, the elixir's magic isn't enough to revive her shattered body: Cha Hae-In still hasn't regained consciousness . Jinwoo feels panic rising in him—he's already lost a valuable ally (Byung-Gu) and refuses to witness the death of another comrade.
The other Korean S-Ranks, still reeling from their last-minute rescue, helplessly surround Jinwoo and Cha. The episode ends on this uneasy note , suggesting that Jinwoo will have to find another solution to save Cha Hae-In .
Episode 12: “On to the Next Target”
Cha Hae-In is dying in Jinwoo's arms . Jinwoo, refusing to let her die, makes a bold decision: he will use his Shadow Extraction power on the deceased Byung-Gu , the healer, so that his shadow will save Cha.
As the other Hunters look on incredulously, Jinwoo walks over to Min Byung-Gu's corpse and invokes his authority as a necromancer . The first attempt fails—Byung-Gu's soul resists, remaining true to his humanity to the very end. Jinwoo tries again, but to no avail. Determined to save Hae-In, he pushes his power to its limits and attempts a third extraction…
A black halo appears: Byung-Gu's shadow finally appears .
As soon as he materializes, the shadow healer rushes to Cha Hae-In and, instinctively replicating his role while alive, lays his hands on her to heal her. Before Baek Yoonho's tearful eyes, his old, deceased friend uses his power one last time—even as a shadow—to close Cha's wounds.
Miraculously, the hunter regains consciousness , her internal injuries slowly healing. Jinwoo has just revealed a stunning facet of his abilities by bringing an ally back to life to save a teammate. The other S-Rank, amazed, understand that Jinwoo is much more than just a powerful hunter: he wields power beyond common understanding .
Baek Yoonho, moved and grateful, then steps forward to Jinwoo. Knowing Byung-Gu's peaceful personality when he was alive, Baek humbly asks Jinwoo to release the healer's soul now that Cha is out of danger. Jinwoo agrees.
Byung-Gu's shadow turns its face towards Baek Yoonho for a moment—a serene smile appears on its specter—then it disappears in a swirl , freed from its servitude. This scene brings a touch of humanity and respect to Jinwoo's necromantic mastery.
The next day, the Jeju operation is officially declared a resounding success . South Korea celebrates the destruction of the giant ant swarm. However, behind the scenes, not everyone is learning the same lessons. It is revealed that the Jeju attack was part of a larger conspiracy by shadowy actors: certain foreign powers were hoping to weaken the country by lowering its S-Rank.
The individual Goto Ryuji was secretly communicating with—presumably a high-ranking Japanese official— is furious when his plan fails . Not only did the Korean Hunters survive thanks to Jinwoo, but Japan lost nearly all of its S-Rank in the process, completely reversing the situation he had hoped for. This failed plot suggests future antagonists who will do anything to oust Jinwoo and his people.
On the ground, Jinwoo takes advantage of the raid's conclusion to score one last victory: he locates the Ant King's corpse and begins an extraction ritual. Because the monster is incredibly powerful, the operation proves difficult and fails repeatedly. But Jinwoo perseveres, driven by the allure of such a powerful shadow in his army.
Finally, with a spectral roar, the Black Ant is reborn as a shadow . Jinwoo has just added his most formidable soldier , whom he names "Beru," to his force. The shadow of the former ant king kneels loyally before his new master , symbolizing the submission of a threat that had held an entire nation in suspense.
Back in Seoul, Jinwoo is hailed as the hero of the Jeju Raid, though Korea officially presents the operation as a joint effort. Go Gunhee, aware of Jinwoo's instrumental role, summons him for a private discussion. He gives him his authorization to create his own guild . Jinwoo now has the green light to found the "Solo Play" (or Solo Leveling) guild with Yoo Jinho, thus bringing their plans to fruition.
This newly acquired freedom marks a turning point: Jinwoo is no longer an illegal free electron , he can act with complete legitimacy.
The episode also concludes several character arcs: a recovered Cha Hae-In warmly thanks Jinwoo (not without a few blushes, hinting at a budding attachment). Jinah returns to a normal life alongside her healed mother, with the invisible protection of her brother's shadows.
We also see new international figures appearing on the horizon: the Chinese hunter Liu Zhigang , one of the most powerful in the world, is mentioned as being interested in the events in Jeju, while behind the scenes, two disturbing figures – perhaps Monarchs, these mysterious entities enemies of the Rulers – begin to move .
In a post-credits scene , Jinwoo's father, Sung Il-Hwan , appears furtively, watching these two potential adversaries from the shadows, looking concerned. He seems to bear a dire warning of impending doom , adding an additional mystery to be solved in the future.
The final scene shows Jinwoo, now at the height of his current power , opening a new portal. Alone, he steps through the door of a high-ranking dungeon , ready to take on another challenge. His gaze is forward, focused on his next target .
Episode 13: “On to the Next Target”
As the season draws to a close , Sung Jinwoo, now possessing formidable power, prepares to face new threats. After defeating the Jeju Giant Ants, Jinwoo decides to continue training on his own to strengthen himself further.
He is more determined than ever to rise to power, knowing that what awaits him surpasses anything he has faced so far. The series then shows us the beginning of a new cycle for the Shadow Monarch .
In the final scene, Jinwoo opens a high-level dungeon portal . He enters alone, leaving the human world behind to face as yet unknown adversaries . His silhouette disappears into the portal's light, as the system activates around him once again .
This closing shot of Jinwoo walking into the unknown symbolizes the continuity of his ascension . His gaze is cold, determined. The world has yet to see what he is capable of.
